Hello World!
Welcome to our blog/website! We are the Black Feather Poets, Inc and I am the founder! We began over 25 years ago in Chicago with our first family of poets. In 2000 I moved to Anchorage and initiated the second group of BFP’s which consisted of a gifted collective of writers and performance poets who were also teachers and social workers as well. We were grateful to partner with Sandy and her late husband, Jerry Harper at Cyrano’s Playhouse on Saturdays following the plays to share our themed shows, it was amazing! Ultimately former Mayor Mark Begich proclaimed February 27th Black Feather Poets Day in Anchorage due to our dedication to community service with several organizations including Covenant House, STAR, North Star Behavioral Health, Anchorage schools and University of Alaska. We also hosted renowned poets including Saul Williams, Grammy winning poet J. Ivy and Slam champion wordsmith Regie Gibson.
The name “Black Feather” pays homage to my heritage, the Echota Cherokee Tribe and being African American. My family hails from a small place called Todd Town, Alabama, named after my great-grandfather Sam Todd. My late-father is where I got my name, Jimmy Pugh and I am proud to be his daughter! My dad was a fabulous gospel musician and lived a great deal of his life on the east coast in New Jersey.
I write poetry to melodies I hear as I pen my thoughts, I am certain it comes from my Pops. I am the lyric to his song.
